Shortly after the movie was announced, Johnston shared some thoughts about the movie, including the vast opportunities available in the upcoming video game movie sequel. Johnston said:
The first Wreck-It Ralph film focused on arcade gaming, with many iconic 80s and 90s video game characters present during the film. Characters from Pac-Man, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and more were incorporated into the film.
With the sequel switching gears to the Internet, it will be interesting to see what video game cameos make it into Ralph Breaks the Internet. It wouldn’t be surprising to see characters from the Internet’s most iconic games and series, including World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rocket League, and others.
Since the movie is slated to release a year from now, Disney has only released a few details, including the return of actors John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch, who will each reprise their roles in the sequel. Alan Tudyk and James Corden also look to be included in the list of actors.
Wreck-It Ralph was a resounding success for Disney, raking in $50 million during its opening weekend, which was a record for Disney at the time. The film went on to make $470 million worldwide with only a $165 million budget. Thanks to the success of Wreck-It Ralph, chances are good Ralph Breaks the Internet will perform just as well or better.
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 is set to release March 2018.
